Getting Ready for Installation Day

Whether you're having loft insulation installed professionally or tackling it yourself, preparation goes a long way. A well-prepared loft means faster installation, better results, and fewer surprises.

Two Weeks Before

Clear the Loft Space

Remove stored boxes, old furniture, Christmas decorations, and any loose boards. This is a great opportunity to declutter.

Check for Existing Insulation

Measure the depth and note the material type. If it's below your joists (typically 100mm), you almost certainly need more.

Look for Issues

Check for water stains, timber rot, pest evidence, old wiring, and plumbing that might need lagging. It's much easier to fix these before insulation covers everything.

One Week Before

Ensure Safe Access

Check your loft hatch opens smoothly, any ladder is secure, and there's adequate lighting.

Address Ventilation

Verify eaves vents are clear, ridge vents are functioning, and soffit vents aren't painted over.

Check Extractor Fan Ducting

Make sure bathroom and kitchen fans vent outside, not into the loft. This needs fixing before insulation goes in.

Identify Recessed Downlights

Non-fire-rated lights need intumescent covers before insulation is laid over them. This is a fire safety requirement.

The Day Before

  • Do a final clear-out around the loft hatch
  • Close bedroom doors below the loft
  • Lay a dust sheet under the hatch
  • Keep pets away from the work area

On Installation Day

A typical installation takes 2-4 hours. The installer will check ventilation, lay insulation to the correct depth, and ensure complete coverage. Ask to see the finished work and confirm ventilation paths are maintained.

After Installation

Your new insulation should last decades. Avoid compressing it, use raised platforms for storage, and check periodically that it hasn't been disturbed.

Within days you should notice your home feels warmer. The real proof comes with your next energy bill — most homeowners see a noticeable reduction from the very first quarter.
